From Concept to Completion: MGISS GIS Development Expertise
We at MGISS offer a whole range of services including consultancy, training, support, and GIS development expertise focusing on accurate data capture; we are all about smart data management, taking this to the next level by creating clear, actionable insight from this data.
You might be thinking this all sounds great, but how does it actually help?
Our expert team provide services and support which fall into three clear pillars, Capture, Manage and Use, which align with our customer workflows. With the teams experience we can help you generate value in all three.
Capture:
By providing high-quality data capture and management, MGISS helps reduce errors. This is crucial for avoiding costly mistakes, like drilling into a gas line or misplacing a utility pole. Cost savings are realised due to fewer surprises and less rework. Also accurate data capture can help when billing based on as-laid measurements.
Manage:
Data management can be seen as a boring but necessary task- if done well, it can hugely increase efficiencies in your daily workflows whether that’s converting data or creating maps. At the heart of this lies robust and efficient automation tools. We use FME desktop and FME Flow (cloud hosted) to drive much of our automation services. Our tools and services include data cleanse, data transformation tools, including CAD to GIS, and automatic reporting tools.
Use:
Once you have achieved the first two then the fun can begin- generating that insight, whether that’s from a web-based interactive operations dashboard or using apps like vGIS to reveal buried assets under your feet with x-ray like vision!
MGISS/Esri partnership
At the heart of what MGISS do is the Esri ArcGIS Platform. GIS is a cartographers dream, and like the Microsoft of the digital map world. Using your spatial data, all three MGISS pillars can be achieved, whether that’s high accuracy data capture by “plugging in” Eos Positioning Systems or Leica GNSS receivers to ArcGIS Field Maps, data management with ArcGIS Pro or simple no-code app building to get maximum use and value ArcGIS has all the gear and loads of ideas!
Being a longtime Silver partner of Esri, we have been building and extending apps on the ArcGIS platform for over 10 years now.
Not surprisingly, our focus is and always should be our brilliant customers who are always a joy to work with. Our core sectors are Utilities (with a focus on water), wastewater contractors and the environment sectors including ecologists and arborists.
In terms of our GIS development expertise, the next section describes how, using Agile methodologies, we can tackle the challenge of meeting and exceeding our very high customer expectations.
Adding value to Esri ArcGIS with GIS development expertise
Typically, our customers are already Esri users or those that plan to be and you might be thinking… how do we improve on a platform that is already so well kitted out and refined? Well for MGISS, using Agile methodologies, we find that it’s stretching those Esri capabilities that extra mile that is often the difference for our customer- we are always asking how do we make it do that little bit more?
Again, we can look at our GIS development offerings by pillar:
Capture: Our focus has always been on accurate and efficient data capture at source. In terms of high accuracy 3D data capture, ArcGIS Field Maps can do it even up to 1cm accuracy! Our plugin Z-Transform takes this capability to the next level by providing a real-time vertical transformation directly into your Field Maps feature service. We can then use our capabilities with the ArcGIS coding language, Arcade, to perform capability such as setting out, turning your GIS software into a surveying toolkit!
Manage: Our data management toolkits are focused on automating often time-consuming tasks, allowing you to focus on the fun stuff! Our drainage management toolbox for highways DDMS surveys is built with Python as an ArcGIS Pro toolbox, and helps those users to bring CS551 and CD353 compliant data in and out of ArcGIS Online for inspection roundtripping. Our free to use CADTransform toolbox is installed into ArcGIS Pro as a menu bar Add-in and really helps to streamline the process of bringing your CAD drawings into ArcGIS.
Use: The development involved in the use pillar can often be the most intensive as this often involves UI/UX work and bringing all those back end and front-end components together into a slick product. Our IPAS solution detects from space third party (build) interference and alerts utility companies of this infringement in proximity to their buried strategic network.
IPAS is a great example of combining MGISS’s GIS development expertise in the manage and use pillars to produce a next-generation risk alert solution. From a manage point of view, there is a constant flow of potential alerts that need to be processed and served up to ArcGIS, and from the user perspective they need a way of visualising and validating these alerts, so a GIS dashboard and combined field inspection system was developed on the ArcGIS Platform.
MGISS specialise in delivering bespoke solutions. Whether it’s native, web, or mobile applications, we design with your business in mind. We aim to enhance your field data capture and GIS analysis, seamlessly integrating data in real time.
Once we have delivered a bit of custom functionality or a new solution, it’s our first-class friendly support that really makes our customer stick with us!
